Jack Marley Journals Part III
The Descent Part 1 as Told by Jack Marley.
October 31, 2022
It was Halloween and I was conversing with Rebecca Hines about how Rumble at the Rock went. I hadn’t been able to watch it as I had been sent to Mexico from Sandy Reed-Lawson to help an old friend out of a tough situation. I had left the boss without a proper support system and when the words ‘he lost,’ was heard I was saddened and felt guilty for not being there for him.
Rebecca should have been the one to comfort him because everyone but her knew what his emerging feelings for her were.
Instead, she told me, “I haven’t heard from him since the night before the match.”
He would have never let that happen regardless of the outcome of the match. Since Rebecca had come back to us, a day hadn’t gone by where he hadn’t spoken with her or planned an outing where he might finally tell her that he cared for her.
He hadn’t said something like that since 2010.
That was once a brag but by the Fall of 2022 it had become depressing.
“Why?”
“I told him I was looking for his mom.”
That was a trigger word if I remembered correctly from Sandy. When I was given the mission to be his employee, we were told she was someone who had been missing for over twenty years and wasn’t even given a name by the organization. She was an unknown entity by all but him and his father.
“He didn’t tell you anything?”
“No, he walked out and then the next time I saw him he was tapping out to Christopher America.”
He tapped out a night after tapping out on sharing how he felt with her. This wasn’t good because this type of defeat could lead him back to who he once was. What was hurting him the most was something only his complicated mind would know.
Lost his pride as a wrestler in a match he promised everyone he would win.
Lost his concentration when his mom was brought up.
Lost his drive to finally share his feelings and ended up heading back inside the cave of doubt.
I may not have been there to witness this but when I returned, I not only felt but could see the dark cloud beginning to descend back upon Steve Harrison’s head.
What could I do to help him transcend above those clouds?
Is that something I could even do?
I looked at the joint in my right hand and the lighter in my left hand: the two best friends I have had for over twenty years.
I felt an overwhelming number of emotions as I walked to the bathroom and threw them both in the trash.
This is what I could do.
I could become something more than a lackey.
Something more than a jester…I could become something better, something Steve needed more than a yes-man.
I just wished this was as far as it would go.
But then again…this is Part One---the clouds would get a lot thicker.
